September 2024 will always hold a special place in my life. At the age of 20, I embarked on my first long-distance journey with my elder brother. Our destination was one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in India — the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi.
What began as a religious trip soon became an unforgettable experience filled with faith, adventure, breathtaking landscapes, and life lessons that I still carry within me today.
A 27-Hour and 1600 KM Journey from Bihar to Jammu
Our journey began in Bihar. As the train slowly moved forward, I sat by the window watching India change before my eyes.
We traveled through different states, witnessing changing landscapes, cultures, and weather conditions along the way. Passing through Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and eventually the northern region of Jammu, every hour felt like a new chapter of the journey.
The trip to Jammu took nearly 27 hours.
Although it was a long journey, I never felt bored. Every railway station, every passing village, and every new scenery brought a sense of excitement. Since it was my first long-distance tour, everything felt special.
As we approached Jammu, the first glimpse of the mountains filled my heart with anticipation. The destination that I had imagined for so long was finally getting closer.
The Beautiful Train Ride from Jammu to Katra
After reaching Jammu, we boarded another train to Katra, the base town for the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage.
The journey from Jammu to Katra lasted around two hours, but it became one of the most memorable parts of my trip.
As the train moved through tunnels, valleys, and mountain landscapes, I found myself completely absorbed by nature’s beauty. The towering hills, fresh air, and dramatic scenery created an atmosphere that words can hardly describe.
Although travelers can also reach Katra by road, experiencing this route by train felt magical.
For the first time in my life, I truly understood why people fall in love with mountain journeys.
My First Moments in Katra
The moment our train arrived at Katra Railway Station, I folded my hands and silently offered my prayers to Mata Vaishno Devi.
The station and its surroundings immediately impressed me. Everything felt clean, organized, and disciplined. The atmosphere carried a sense of devotion that could be felt everywhere.
Outside the station, a representative from our hotel welcomed us and helped us reach our accommodation.
One thing that stood out during my stay in Katra was the kindness of the local people. Their hospitality and helpful nature made us feel comfortable from the very beginning.
From our hotel, we could see the mountain route leading toward the shrine. Looking at those mountains filled me with excitement and anticipation.
After resting for a few hours, we prepared ourselves for the most important part of the journey.
Beginning the Sacred Trek
At around 8 PM, the hotel owner personally dropped us at the starting point of the pilgrimage route.
Before leaving, he smiled and said, “Jai Mata Di.”
Those simple words somehow made the experience even more meaningful.
We completed the required registration process using our identity documents and received the official Yatra slip.
Holding that slip in my hand felt special.
The wait was over.
I folded my hands, remembered Mata Rani, and began the sacred climb with my elder brother.
The Spiritual Energy of the Pilgrimage Route
As we moved forward, thousands of pilgrims surrounded us.
- Some were walking with families.
- Some were traveling with friends.
- Some were walking alone.
Children, elderly people, and physically tired devotees continued their journey with remarkable determination.
The entire route echoed with chants of “Jai Mata Di.”
Every chant seemed to provide fresh energy to tired legs.
It was then that I truly understood the popular saying:
“When Mata calls, no obstacle can stop you from reaching her door.”
Ardhkuwari: A Place of Faith and Patience
After several kilometers of walking, we reached Ardhkuwari.
According to Hindu belief, this is the sacred cave where Mata Vaishno Devi meditated for nine months while escaping Bhairavnath.
The waiting time for cave entry was long.
Due to security procedures and the need to take care of our belongings, only my elder brother could enter while I remained outside.
When he returned, he said something that I still remember today:
“The peace inside cannot be described in words.”
His expression alone was enough for me to understand how special the experience had been.
A Night Filled with Devotion
The night view of the pilgrimage route was unforgettable.
The illuminated pathways winding through the mountains looked magical.
Thousands of lights sparkled across the hills, while the sounds of prayers and chants echoed through the cool mountain air.
At that moment, it felt as if the entire mountain was immersed in devotion.
Reaching the Holy Shrine
The journey from Ardhkuwari to the Bhawan required even more effort.
We unknowingly followed the older route instead of the newer pathway used by most pilgrims.
The climb was challenging.
There were moments of exhaustion.
Yet every step carried the hope of reaching the holy shrine.
When we finally arrived and had the opportunity to witness the sacred Pindis representing Mahalakshmi, Mahakali, and Mahasaraswati, all tiredness disappeared instantly.
It is difficult to explain what I felt during those moments.
Sometimes faith creates experiences that words simply cannot capture.
The Final Climb to Bhairav Baba
After completing the darshan, we continued toward the Bhairav Baba Temple, located about 1.5 kilometers above the shrine.
Some pilgrims used the lift facility, but we chose to continue on foot.
Along the route, I saw elderly people, young children, and exhausted devotees continuing their climb with unwavering faith.
Watching them reminded me of the extraordinary power of belief.
Faith often allows people to achieve things that physical strength alone cannot.
River Rafting in the Chenab River: An Unexpected Adventure
Our journey was not only spiritual—it also included an
unforgettable adventure.
While traveling toward Shivkhori, we got the opportunity to experience river rafting in the Chenab River.
Initially, I felt nervous.
The river flowed swiftly through the mountains, and the sight of the powerful water was both exciting and intimidating.
However, once the raft entered the river, fear quickly turned into excitement.
We rafted for approximately 3 kilometers.
The cold splashes of water, the surrounding mountains, and the thrill of navigating the river created memories that I will never forget.
It was my first rafting experience, and it added a unique dimension to an already incredible journey.
Shivkhori: Where Even Silence Feels Spiritual
Afterward, we traveled around 80 kilometers to reach Shivkhori.
The final stretch required a trek of nearly 2 kilometers, which we completed on foot.
Shivkhori Cave is famous for its mysterious atmosphere and naturally formed structures that devotees associate with Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Sheshnag.
Inside the cave stands a naturally formed Shiva Lingam.
The moment I saw it, an overwhelming sense of peace filled my mind.
The silence inside the cave felt sacred.
It was as if even silence itself was engaged in worship.
My Vaishno Devi Travel Experience was not only spiritual but also filled with adventure and self-discovery.
More Than a Journey
This pilgrimage taught me lessons that extend far beyond religion.
It taught me that faith can strengthen the mind when the body becomes tired.
It taught me that perseverance matters more than comfort.
It taught me that peace is often found in the most unexpected places.
Every mountain path carried a lesson.
Every cave carried a mystery.
Every step carried a prayer.
